Portrait of Niclas Wunder, freelance AI engineer and fullstack developer

Hi, I'm Niclas.

Freelance AI engineer and senior fullstack developer from Stuttgart, Germany. I've been building software for over seven years. Along the way, I learned one thing: whether code is any good shows in production, not in the demo.

My path

I started like many do: wanting to build things people actually use. Early projects quickly turned serious: frontend, backend, databases, deployment. Fullstack was never a buzzword to me, but a necessity: if you want to own a system, you have to understand it as a whole.

In the years that followed, I built web platforms and business applications for companies of all sizes, from internal tools for mid-sized businesses to multi-tenant platforms. Along the way it became clear that technology is only half the job. The other half: understanding the business behind it, communicating honestly, and building software that's still maintainable three years from now.

The difference between a prototype and a product isn't more code. It's ownership.

Large language models changed what software can do. I dug in early and deep: multi-agent systems, RAG pipelines, and above all the question of how to make AI quality measurable instead of just claiming it. Today I build multi-agent systems in enterprise environments, among other things, with evaluation and CI/CD quality gates, so impressive demos become reliable systems.

Going independent was the logical step for me: closer to the results, direct communication without the telephone game, full responsibility for what I deliver. That's exactly how I work with my clients today, whether in a two-person project or embedded in a larger team.

What I stand for

Production beats prototype

A demo is a starting point, not a result. I build with operations, monitoring and maintainability in mind from the first commit.

No black box

You always know what I'm working on, what it costs and where the risks are. Bad news arrives early, not at the end of the project.

Ownership

I don't just work through tickets, I take responsibility for outcomes. If something doesn't work, it's my problem until it does.

Technology follows the problem

I make stack decisions based on requirements, not hype. Sometimes the boring solution is the right one. I'll tell you so.
